Bohemian Bubbles
Pretty Is as Pretty Does
I've always loved tinkering with concoctions, my mother made soap when I was a child
and I was fascinated with the process. As an adult I turned to soap making as an
extension of my herb growing and gardening hobbies. The soap making has grown and
grown. Goats milk was added and I love the added creamy lather from the milk proteins.
The soaps are produced here on our small farm in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. I
love using natural ingredients in the soaps like clays, botanicals and essential oils.
The end result of the soap is half the story. I try to use a biodynamic model and treat the
farm as a whole unit. As such the goats are a bigger picture than only the milk. The goats
also produce fertiliser for herb and vegetable crops. Balance is something that governs
the growth of our company. The output of the goats must match the capability of the land to
reabsorb the compost produced. We do not dry lot the animals and instead use the
compost to increase the garden areas. The garden areas can not expand to a point of
needing outside fertilizers...we do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Balance must
be maintained. I feel it is my job to not only make absolutely lovely soaps but protect and
improve my environment while doing so. This year bees will be added to help with crop
fertility and we will then use our own honey and beeswax in the soaps.
I am often asked if we drink the goat's milk. Yes. I also make lovely cheese during the
summer when we have a glut of fresh milk available. These products are only for our
family though. Sorry : )
